If you are a wine aficionado and in the Springfield, Ohio area, one great place worth visiting is JC Wine Cellars. JC Wine Cellars combines the love of wine with a great dining experience to create something wholly unique to this area. Owners Gary and Janet Meal are the resident chef and winemaker, respectively and share a love of both great food and great wine that is expressed in the establishment that they both created together.
Don’t be fooled: not all great wine is grown exclusively in California, France, or Italy! There is great wine to be had right in the heart of the Midwest in Ohio. JC Wine Cellars has many different wines to choose from. If you’re into reds, they have a great Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and if you’re into whites they have a great Chardonnay Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and White Zinfandel. They also have a Millennium Reserve Red and White, covering all the bases. With Janet personally producing and cellaring all the wine here (though they do carry some other favorite wines from all over the world), JC Wine Cellars is a great place to bring the Midwesterners in your life that have never had the chance to savor a great bottle of wine. Once they taste the wines JC has to offer, they’ll have a hard time going back to that $10 bottle of wine from the liquor store!
When it comes to food, JC Wine Cellars shines just as brightly. They have both a lunch and dinner menu, all homemade and fresh. For lunch, they offer creative sauces, homemade soups, gourmet sandwiches, beef tenderloin burgers, quiche, fresh seafood and more. JC’s lunch menu, you’ll find, offers more variety and filling meals than most lunch menus out there.
For dinner, it gets even better. On the dinner menu, you have duck, lamb, aged beef, fresh seafood in daily, South African lobster, babyback ribs, osso bucco, and homemade gourmet pasta dishes. Even their appetizers and soup du jour go above and beyond, as every bit is homemade and has an international flavor. You” find everything on the menu to have the best of both worlds: refined and filling – like any good Midwestern meal should be!
The best thing about JC Wine Cellars for any hardcore wine hobbyist is that the winemaker is right there in the building. Janet or one of her employees know exactly what kind of wines pair the best with their various dishes and can suggest what sort of pairing would work best for you, depending on your taste. Quite often, you’ll find that restaurant employees really don’t have the knowledge you need to get the kind of pairing you want to give you the best experience possible.
Many times, servers simply regurgitate what they’ve heard others say or what they’ve been trained to say without having any real knowledge of the milieu.
