Alcohol Free Wine: An Overview on Your Options
If you love wine but are unable to have alcohol for medical reasons, you may have wondered if there is such a thing as alcohol free wine. The good news is that, yes, there is such a thing as alcohol free wine. The bad news is that, for the most part, most wine lovers will tell you that it isn’t worth a darn. There are a few manufacturers out there that are either making normal wine then removing the alcohol via a complicated process, or making wine that has never gotten to the fermentation process.
The most common type of alcohol free wine is made by Navarro Vineyards in California. Unlike most other alcohol free wines, Navarro’s non-alcoholic wines are actually pretty good. Their alcohol free wines are made from Gewurtztraminer or Pinot Noir grapes that have not yet fermented, porducing a wonderful white and red non-alcholic wine, respectively. They also have a great tart green grape juice called Verjus made on the premises. Their no-alcoholic wine was first created as a grape juice for children visiting the winery, but it caught on with adults that wanted wine without the alcohol and just absolutely exploded from there. After all, what is wine without alcohol but grape juice? It’s a pretty simple connection to make if you think about it. But make no mistake, this stuff isn’t like the grape juice you get at the grocery store – it simply has to be tasted to be believed. All three alcohol free wines sell for $11 per bottle.
Sutter Home also makes some alcohol free wines; their non-alcholic Merlot is particularly popular. Though Merlot is often maligned by some wine snobs (especially after seeing the movie Sideways), it is still one of the most popular reds out there, so it should come as no surprise that there is a non-alcholic version that is popular. Sutter Home makes passable table wines at $5 a pop. Of course, if you are paying just $5 for a bottle of wine, alcohol free or not, you have to know that you aren’t going to be getting the tastiest wine out there.
A lot of people can’t have alcohol but want to access the health benefits that come with drinking wine. The easiest way to do this – especially if you don’t like the taste of alcohol free wine, is with a supplement. There are quite a few companies out there making resveratrol (the active ingredient in wine that strengthens your health) in pill form. This is a very simple way to make sure you are getting the resveratrol antioxidant that you are looking for when drinking wine for your health.
All in all, there are some good alcohol free wines out there, and some bad ones. Some will essentially be grape juice, while others will barely be potable. You always get what you pay for, of course, so Navarro’s non-alcoholic wines are probably your best bet. Barring that, go with a resveratrol supplement to get the antioxidants you are after.
